3M Extreme Masking Tapes

Acid baths, sandblasting, extreme heat, extended weathering and wear – we understand the challenges of extreme environments and we have solutions.

Tapes that can take it

Not only does your masking solution have to withstand the same harsh environment as the parts you put it on, when it’s done protecting the underlying surface it should come off cleanly. It was a 3M lab assistant visiting an automaker that led to the invention of masking tape in 1925, and we have continued to work with our industrial customers to create products to meet their ever-changing needs. Our goal is to provide products you can count on to work well time after time masking in harsh conditions and helping to improve your productivity.

  • Crepe masking, fine line tapes and masking films are used for high-temperature masking, end-of-line paint repair and two-tone paint jobs. Duct tapes are used for covering holes and for holding glass windows or temporary protective plastic sheeting.

  • Crepe masking and fine line tapes are used in the exterior paint process of the aircraft for paper hanging and creating sharp paint lines. Duct tapes and masking films are used in ground applications to protect the landing gear during the paint process.

  • Crepe masking tapes are used to mask large areas and in two-tone paint processes, while fine line tapes are very conformable for masking irregular shapes and curves to create specialty designs and custom paint jobs. Duct tapes are used for covering holes and temporary holding.

  • After assembly, a boat is masked before entering the paint booth, for a painting or gel coating process. Good masking solutions reduce paint re-work and minimize slivering when the tape is removed. Masking and duct tapes are also used to protect interior surfaces that are prone to scratches and dings.

  • Crepe masking tapes are used to mask large areas and in two-tone paint processes, while conformable fine line tapes are used to mask curves and irregular shapes. Duct tapes are used for covering holes and temporary holding.

  • Masking tapes protect areas during painting and sealing operations, with specialized tapes for stucco application and flatback tapes used to seam temporary floor protection. Duct tapes are used for bundling and for hanging heavy plastic sheeting, and may be chosen for clean removal.

Flatback tapes are used in paper mills for core tabbing, sealing the tail during the winding process and holding down protective layers around finished rolls. They are also used to splice two webs of paper together both at the mill and at the printing press.

  • Product families for Extreme Masking Tape applications

Because each application is extreme for different reasons, the specific environment the tape needs to withstand determines which tape families are best suited to each application. For this purpose, extreme masking tapes are grouped into families by the backing or carrier that the adhesive is applied to.

Anodizing tapes need to resist the harsh chemistry of the acid bath, so these tapes come from the Polyester, Vinyl and Foil tape families.

Electroplating (and Electroless Plating) tapes need to withstand similarly harsh chemical solutions, and these tapes come from the Vinyl and Foil tape families.

Powder Coating tapes need to withstand the extreme heat of the bake cycle, so these tapes come from the Polyester and Polyimide tape families.

Extreme Masking Tape applications

Electroplating

Electroplating uses electricity to deposit a layer of any desired metal on another substrate in order to change the surface properties or to build up part thickness. Electroless plating achieves the same result by using chemical properties rather than electricity to drive the plating process. In both cases your masking tape must withstand the immersive solution without leaking but should also remove easily and cleanly with no or minimal residue requiring further attention.

Powder Coating

Powder coating uses electrical attraction to apply free-flowing dry powder to a part which then passes through an oven so the powder melts to form an even paint surface. Not only must the masking tape prevent powder from reaching masked areas, but both the carrier and the adhesive must withstand the high oven heat (usually 400°F/204°C or higher for 5-30 minutes) without transferring to the part so the tape removes cleanly afterward.
